Purpose Driven Work

http://www.flickr.com/photos/thristian/371670597/Do you struggle to really nail down the purpose of your work? A clearly defined purpose is similar to a blueprint in that is gives guidance to a project and demonstrates how the pieces fit together.  We sometimes hesitate to articulate our purpose because we feel we haven’t gotten it quite right.  Unlike a building project though, our work often goes on despite the lack of a clear blueprint.  Wouldn’t it be better to at least have a crude diagram, something to steer our efforts?

Here’s my current attempt.  “The purpose of my work is to help people have confidence that their work can make a difference in the world and to help them grow in effectiveness.”

What’s your blueprint?

Great post, Step! I agree and I love the idea of a personal “mission” statement. I don’t have one yet, but I should and will start thinking about it now. One thing I love to do is sketch out ideas before I even start walking towards them, I think that fits into this as well :)

Thanks AJ. Sketching out a concept is a great idea. I’d love to hear the draft of your purpose statement as you work on it if you care to share.
